Professional/Amateur Swimming
Professional swimming is one of the most competitive sports in the world today. Thanks to the Olympics, Michael Phelps and other notoriety this sport has been taking advantage of over the past several years. Just like any other professional sport that is doing rather well, there are amateurs who are looking to make it up to the next level. These swimmers have been putting in hard time training individually as well as working with people who are able to take their swimming to the next level.
There are so many different types of competitive swimming. Whether you are someone who is an expert in butterfly, breaststroke, free style, backstroke or medley you are going to be in for some tough competition. There are a number of professional swimming organizations including the United States swim team. However, the main organization that governs swimming is Federation Internationale de Natation. This group of individuals monitors the sport for the international community as well as the International Olympic Committee. Swimming is an official Olympic sport being played out during the summer games. There are 36 officially recognized individual swimming results. Sadly, the IOC currently only recognizes 17 of them. Swimming meets are often played out in specially designed pools that have starting blocks as well as specific length lanes. This is to help ensure that swimmers are able to think only about swimming instead of having to worry about different lengths of lanes in the pool. Short course swimming lasts from the end of September to the end of March with the remainder of time being spent in long course swimming. Generally, short course pools are around 25 meters in length compared to 50 meters in length for pools in long course swimming. Judging of individual swimming is also very important to most swimmers. There are a number of official characteristics that are analyzed to ensure that a swimmer is using the correct stroke as well as other information.
Swimwear is also a very complicated topic. Some individuals wear specially designed suits and some sections of the sport have a rule that prohibits wearing certain types of clothing. There are lots of specifics to learn about this aquatic sport but if you’re passionate about swimming, the experience will prove to be more than worth it.
